Concept of Communication

           Communication, taken from the Latin word '𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙪𝙣𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙧𝙚' which means '𝙩𝙤 𝙨𝙝𝙖𝙧𝙚', is a thought process of exchanging information and ideas between at least two persons i.e., sender and receiver. Mediums of communication may vary as per the available resources for the activity. Communication can be established by various means like speaking, writing, non-verbal  behaviours like body language, touch, eye contact and sign languages though it is made effective only when the language used is unambiguous, the transferred message is clear to the target receiver, and objective is achieved  i.e., to create understanding. Hence, a good communication can be defined as the flow of information from  person to another. Moreover, it is significant to develop competence in language learning skills in order to communicate adequately. 
           A good communication is result oriented. Communication process of six components-context, 𝙎𝙚𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙧 𝙤𝙧 𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙤𝙙𝙚𝙧, 𝙢𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙖𝙜𝙚, 𝙢𝙚𝙙𝙞𝙪𝙢, 𝙧𝙚𝙘𝙚𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙤𝙧 𝙙𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙙𝙚𝙧 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙥𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙚. The context of communication is very significant as it is the primary component of communication. The context communication may be social, cultural, ethnic or physical. Context of communication is important because the sender selects the message to convey within the free of reference. Sender begins the act if communication with encoding the message by a set if words and symbols known to the receiver to transmit the message and produce response. The message contains absolute information the sender needs to provide. Medium is the channel by which sender transports the message. Selection of the right medium is necessary for effective messanging and correct interpretation by the recipient. Medium can be oral, written or electronic. Receiver is the person to whom the message and interprets it to supply feedback to the sender. Feedback conforms correct interpretation to the sender by receiver.

  • 'Context', 'Sender', 'Message', 'Receiver', and response are six components of communication process. 
  • Fax e-mail, telephonic conversation, written document etc. Are the mediums of transportation of message. 
    Technologies advancements has influenced communication a lot. Telephonic conversations have birth to real-time oral communication between man to man while information and communication technology (ICT) to written  communication  in the form  of  electronic correspondence (e-mail). Expansion of internet in the era 1900s brought a radical change to the realm of communication and gradually mobile terminals and wireless broadband made their presences felt as being omnipresent. Communication and technologies have brought tremendous changes for the welfare of society at a rapid pace. Good communication skills with the fusion of advanced communication technologies can produce desired outcomes for young professionals.

Importance of Effective Communication

        Effective communication is a fundamental requirements for the accomplishments of desired goals. It necessities ability in delivering and receiving message by using the right medium and language in the given context. An effective communication goes beyond the very basics of communication i.e., the exchange of information. It's about getting the right information and conveying  a message to someone in precisely the way it was intended and make the person on the other end feel heard and understood. Effective communication blends a set of skills which comprises active listening, nonverbal communication, comprehensible language, and ability to communicate assertively. It helps in connecting people at organizational and social levels. 
       Effective communication ensures good understanding at it asks for engaged listening which not only confirms the undercurrent emotions and fine intonations of the speaker in the message but also provides an ease to the person which aids to build up a connection link between the two. Non verbal signals are added assets to effective communication. Non verbal communication implies body language which includes facial expressions, postures, body movement, gestures, eye contact and paralanguage features like pitch, tone, volume, stress and intonation. Use of such non verbal cues enhances the depth of communication and reinforces what is being said during the act of communication. Assertive expression is a key feature of effective communication. Such expressions enhance the confidence of speaker for decision-making and demand honest expressions of the self while respecting other' as effective communication is about understanding the view points of others, not winning an argument. 
            Complete and coherent use of language is set for the target audience to make it constructive and explicable considering the intent of the document and the context in which it is being written. Language of an effective communication is concise, clear, concrete, unambiguous and suitably formal. Proper formatting of written documents adds value to the efficacy of the communication as they are written as per their length and lay out. Concrete language contains description which form substantial descriptions with details the reader can imagine. Use of familiar words and phrases make communication receptive to all. The use of suitable language is a delicate choice in communication as meaning of words relative which can be interpreted in different ways by different people in different state of affairs.
